-History-
Dylan started studying Suzuki violin at the age of four in his native city of Milwaukee, WI. After ten years of ear training, competition, and youth orchestra he utilized his technical skills to enter the DownBeat Award-winning jazz department at Milwaukee High School Of The Arts as a guitarist. Shortly after he formed the local rock band Gwenn as the principal singer/guitarist/composer, and started performing and recording around town. Dylan went on to study jazz guitar and composition at Lawrence University under the guidance of Ken Schaphorst. He played guitar regularly in various combos as well as the (also) DownBeat Award-winning big band, and had the fortune of working with artists such as Maria Schneider, John Medeski, and Danilo Perez. Dylan also played guitar for a campus funk band The Committee, bass for a local hip-hop crew Bad News Jones, guitar for Milwaukee based R&B/hip-hop acts Growing Nation and Black Elephant, and found time to shed on drums and piano after-hours at the conservatory.
After graduation Dylan decided to move to Chicago with a few members of his band and started performing around town. He subbed in a few times on bass at a hip-hop poetry night in Wicker Park, and eventually became the lead guitarist for the house band Zzaje. Due to Zzaje's skill, retention, adaptability, and exposure to the local arts community, they became the "on-call" band to hire for Chicago artists and national artists alike. This eventually led to work with Common, Lupe Fiasco, R. Kelly, Malik Yusef, J. Ivy, George Clinton, Tye Tribbett, Eric Roberson, Dwele, Rhymefest, El Debarge, Joe, and many others. Zzaje had the honor of working with local independent artists as well, and thouroughly enjoyed contributing to the midwest music scene for years.
Chicago was a transformative and meaningful time for Dylan. He played for various corporate/cover/wedding bands and tribute shows showcasing the music of The Police, U2, CCR, Michael Jackson, Neil Diamond, and R.E.M. He started original projects with Doc's Delorean, Bad News Jones, GBOT, Zzaje, and Goodnight Nurse, and recorded with many local hip-hop and R&B acts. He hit the road with El Debarge, Kindred, 2Face Idibia, Todd Carey, and Agnez Monica, while occasionally sitting in at Sunday Worship services and curating a weekly local jazz/gypsy/folk music series that ran for three years. After years of debate and opportunities calling, Dylan decided to move to Los Angeles in 2015.
